Another week has passed in our quaint desert town. Just when we feel like it’s finally starting to cool off, the temperature rises past 100 degrees again. Don’t worry though, only one month and two days left until the Autumn solstice.
Today I’m going to officially kick off listing our favorite spots in Ridgecrest by writing about the BLM a.k.a the Bureau of Land Management. I should start off by saying I don’t mean the BLM office on Richmond Rd, but the Ridgecrest Regional Wild Horse and Burro Corral where they keep the wild horses and burros. If you take a short drive east on the CA 178 you will see the brown, faded sign and shortly after you’ll take a right.
Ridgecrest Regional Wild Horse & Burro Facility
The entrance to the BLM can be found just past the fire station on the right, but instead of pulling into the entrance go ahead and take a left to follow the dirt road. That magical dusty road takes you around a corner to where all the wild horses and burros are kept! Yes, you can stop your car and get out to say hello to the adorable babies that are there currently.
No, he’s not dead. He’s just sunbathing.
See? Totally fine.
I don’t know if you’re actually allowed to feed them treats so I don’t suggest doing it. (But if you do I won’t say a word)
A curious little colt. I got attached, but my husband said no.
Fun Fact: The BLM started their wild horse and burro program in 1982 and prepare over 1,000 animals a year for adoption. I highly suggest that if you’re in the market for a project horse, you adopt a mustang. They are smart, sturdy, wonderful horses and once you earn their trust they will do just about anything you ask of them.
Momma Donkeys (a.k.a Jennys or Jennets) and their young foals
If you love animals, this is the place for you. The BLM also hosts individual or group tours and their hours are Monday through Friday 7:00AM to 3:30PM. You can call (760) 384-5765 for more information.
Mares and their foals
The reason I love this place so much is because it has always been a sort of stress reliever for me. It’s a quiet, a little off the beaten path and just watching the horses do their thing is pretty relaxing. Eben if you aren’t a “horse person” this place is definitely worth checking out with your little ones.
Thanks for making it to the end of our post! We’d love to know about your favorite places in (or around) Ridgecrest. There has been so much negativity lately so please help us spread the positivity by letting us know what you love about Ridgecrest. The people and their stories are the life blood of this community. Let’s remind each other of why Ridgecrest is so great!
P.S. The BLM is NOT a sponsor 🙂
